Here East, a 1.2 million sq ft redevelopment of the site which once housed the 2012 Olympic Games broadcast and press centre has won a London/South East British Council of Offices (BCO) award in the Refurbished and Recycled Workplace category.
Colliers International’s Project & Building Consultancy team has worked closely with Here East, being developed by iCITY, a company owned by clients of Delancey, from the start of the scheme. Colliers has acted as project managers and employer’s agents through the main redevelopment stage. The team also provided acquisition due diligence surveys and tenant liaison as well as fitting out monitoring services.
Here East is a campus designed for start-ups and entrepreneurial businesses to co-exist and collaborate with global, established businesses and support genuine productive innovation. All original buildings at Here East were designed with flexibility and future use in mind. It is now home to a regenerated, sustainable and efficient community of tenants including creative businesses, tech, media, education and data companies. Canalside restaurants and bars also provide a vibrant atmosphere, making the development a destination in its own right.
- Education – Here East’s experts offer young people inspiration and opportunity through workshops and engagement with local schools
- Employment – Here East has created 5,200 jobs by prioritising local talent and suppliers
- Enterprise – Here East is the country’s largest incubator for start-ups
- Environment – Here East has repurposed an Olympic landmark into a sustainable working community designed for the future growth and prosperity of the area
The scheme has also achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master-planning projects, infrastructure and buildings. The operational energy consumption is minimised through the design of energy efficient building shells and the use of heat and cooling from the central energy network.
In addition, Here East, by virtue of its previous function in serving the needs of the international media, has some of the strongest, most resilient connectivity and energy infrastructure in the country and is a crucial European intersection for data and technology. This makes it the perfect location for tech start-ups to put down their roots, push the boundaries of technology, and grow.
Gavin Poole, CEO of Here East said: “It is fantastic that Here East has been recognised by the British Council of Offices in the Refurbished and Recycled Workplace category. It has been an exciting process of collaboration with HawkinsBrown to realise the Here East vision, and one which reflects the kinds of collaboration between tenants that the space is designed to drive. This award is a great result for how sustainable an eco-system the campus is for businesses of all sizes looking for prime innovation and collaboration.”
This project has now been put forward for the national BCO award and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on 3 October 2018.
